Project DaZ ab 6

Child second language acquisition after age 6

The role of explicit language knowledge in learning German for career changer at schools and for young refugees

The DaZ ab 6 project analyses the language acquisition of learners who have their first systematic contact with German in childhood or adolescence. The focus is on the understanding and use of connectors, i.e. lexical elements that link sentences together. These include subjunctives such as als and nach or weil. Although connectors express logical relationships such as temporal sequence or causality in every language, the specific way in which they are used differs from one language to another. For this reason, connectors are a challenge for second language learners.
