Estimation of lengths by fourth graders – international comparisons of students‘ strategy choice in Taiwan and Germany

The project ELF int. aims to analyze the procedure for estimating length with a view to accuracy in an international comparison.

Estimating is a skill that is relevant to everyday life and anchored in the curriculum. It has already been established that estimating lengths in different situations requires different sub-skills. Components that can influence estimation accuracy are the different estimation situations. The extent to which the application of specific estimation strategies affects estimation accuracy has not yet been systematically investigated.

In the research project ELF int., the choice of strategy of fourth-graders when estimating lengths in Taiwan and Germany is therefore surveyed using interviews and compared concerning estimation accuracy and estimation situation. The comparison between Germany and Taiwan also offers the opportunity to consider the influence of different learning conditions and educational traditions on these relationships.

The aim of the ELF int. project is therefore, on the one hand, to analyze the influences of the educational tradition of both countries on the choice of strategy and, on the other hand, to determine the significance of the choice of strategy for the accuracy of the children’s estimates.
