Project SprachFit

Scientific Evaluation

The acquisition of language skills is essential for overall child development. The “SprachFit” initiative aims to identify language deficits in children at an early stage and provide targeted support. The accompanying scientific evaluation study examines the implementation of the initiative and its impact on child development.

With its SprachFit initiative, the state of Baden-Württemberg aims to strengthen children’s language skills from an early age as a foundation for educational success, social participation, and equal opportunities. The program focuses on identifying children with language support needs early and providing targeted support by trained professionals.

Since 2024, additional language support has been offered to preschool children in selected daycare centres. In the future, SprachFit is to be implemented statewide and made mandatory. Further components include the introduction of junior classes (from 2026), the expansion of everyday language support in daycare settings, the increased use of multi-professional teams in schools, and the integration of the “Lernen mit Rückenwind” program. The initiative is being evaluated by a consortium consisting of the Heidelberg University of Education, the University of Education Weingarten, and DIPF. Funded by the Institute for Educational Analysis Baden-Württemberg (IBBW), the evaluation runs until 2029 and examines both implementation and effects on children’s development.

Methods include observations, surveys of stakeholders, group interviews, and analyses of program materials. Additionally, the language skills of approximately 800 children are tracked over several years to examine their development.
